Medication For Heartburn During Pregnancy

Heartburn during pregnancy can be painful and irritating. Thankfully, there are various types and brands of medication for heartburn during pregnancy.

There are over the counter products, natural products and prescription products.

Over the counter medication for heartburn during pregnancy consists of antacid with calcium or magnesium. This helps to ease the pain and discomfort of heartburn. You must be careful which product you choose, as some contain ingredients such as aspirin which can be dangerous for a baby. Check with your doctor before choosing an over the counter pregnancy heartburn medication.

Natural medication for heartburn during pregnancy usually consists of herbal mixtures. For example peppermint water is considered by some to be very effective in easing heartburn. Some chemists have this available. Slippery elm powder neutralizes stomach acid (which causes the heartburn) and this can be mixed with various ingredients such as milk and honey.
Then there are the teas, which can be quite effective in treating pregnancy heartburn. Natural teas such as peppermint and aniseed are good choices - obviously you should keep right away from caffeine as it won't help at all.

Yoghurt has been known to reduce heartburn. Eat this slowly and eat a small amount to see if it has any impact on your heartburn.

There are also prescription medications for medication for heartburn during pregnancy, but doctors prefer not to prescribe these unless all else fails and they absolutely have to due to the woman having severe heartburn. These prescription drugs contain acid suppressing ingredients such as omeprazole or ranitidine. It is not known what effect these medications have on the baby, however studies have not shown any related problems thus far.
