Birth control pills

The birth control pill stands to be the most famous and effective way of reversible birth control. These pills are scientifically called oral contraceptives. The latest pills in the market do not ape the past and hence instead of those numerous side effects provide the user with lot of benefits. The birth control pills prevent pregnancy but do not protect the body from any kind of sexually transmitted diseases. Today science has found out newer efficiencies and the birth control pills contain fewer doses of hormones and that is why the side effects of these pills have decreased considerably. These pills are of three types namely Progestin-only pills, combination pills and emergency contraceptive pills.

History of birth control pills

The history of birth control dates back to 3000 B.C. when in Egypt the concept of condoms arose. Though the cause is not very clear, there are proofs of men wearing it. Then was the pessary in 1850 B.C. that acted as a female contraceptive device. Around 600 B.C., the Greeks found out about Silphion that is the most premier oral contraceptive. During the period of 1844-1873, the U.S. birth control business boosted and many other intrauterine devices, cervical caps, vaginal sponges and diaphragms came into picture. Margaret Sanger and Mrs. Cyrus Mc Cormick in coalition plan to fund and aid the birth control and this concern grew out of their own personal experiences. The money went into Gregory Pincus's study and research towards inventing an oral contraceptive. The then famous drug companies Syntex and Searle emerged successful in creating artificial synthetic progesterone. The first pill released in 1960. Searle Company convinced FDA to grant Envoid, the first pill rights to be marketed. The dosage was anyway too high and hence the tablet was accompanied by major side-effects. The mass usage of pills started only after the year 1980. It was recently in 1992 that FDA allowed the first hormone shot Depo Provera to be used as a birth control method that is effective for several months.

Conclusion

The birth control pills are sold only on the doctor's prescription. Anyhow the pharmaceutical houses do grant emergency contraceptive pills if required. Today the birth control pills are famous with majority of the public and hence have gained a lot of impetus.
