Female Birth Control Measures

Often it is considered that a woman has the upper hand in practicing birth control and makes the decision of conceiving or refraining from reproducing. This is true to a great extent as there are a large number of female birth control measures, which are commonly used for practicing birth control. In fact the female birth control measures outnumber the male contraceptives in number as well as in effect. Female birth control is extremely crucial especially for avoiding unplanned or unwanted pregnancies.

Types of Female Birth Control

There are various types of female contraceptives or birth control measures that are extremely effective in avoiding unwanted pregnancy. The most prominent types are as follows:

1) Hormonal contraceptives: Hormonal birth control measures include the conventional birth control pills, vaginal rings, skin patch and shot. The hormonal birth control measures restrict the production of the monthly egg and thereby restrict the chances of the woman getting pregnant. These contraceptives are also helpful in curing heavy periods and cramping.

2) Intrauterine devices (IUD): Intrauterine devices or IUDs are yet another effective female birth control measures. The IUD is planted inside the female uterus through vagina and the cervix. The IUD restricts the sperm from reaching the female egg and hence does not allow the egg to be fertilized. The IUD is also extremely helpful in restricting an egg from implanting and developing into an embryo. IUDs are considered as one of the safest ways of female contraceptives.

3) Restrictive Methods: There are several barriers or restrictive female birth control measures like condoms, diaphragms, cervical caps, sponges, spermicides and Lea's Shield. These measures restrict the flow of the sperms or destroy those that get across the barrier through the cervix. A condom is an effective and an important preventive against sexually transmitted diseases. Women are advised to use condoms each time they have sex.

4) Permanent birth control measures: There are several permanent birth control measures like vasectonomy that can be practiced if the women are certain that they do not wish to practice pregnancy anymore. Vasectonomy is also known as tubal ligation.

These are some of the most effective and popular forms of female contraception or female birth control methods.
