Some nursing women also develop clogged milk ducts, which can lead to mastitis, a painful infection of the breast. While most nursing problems can be solved with home remedies, mastitis requires prompt medical care (see "Tips for Breast-Feeding Success").

For all its health benefits, breast-feeding isn't always easy. In the early weeks, it can be painful. A woman's nipples may become sore or cracked. She may experience engorgement more than a bottle-feeding mother, when the breasts become so full of milk they're hard and painful. Some nursing women also develop clogged milk ducts, which can lead to mastitis, a painful infection of the breast. While most nursing problems can be solved with home remedies, mastitis requires prompt medical care (see "Tips for Breast-Feeding Success").

Women who plan to go back to work soon after birth will have to plan carefully if they want to breast-feed. If her job allows, a new mother can pump her breast milk several times during the day and refrigerate or freeze it for the baby to take in a bottle later. Some women alternate nursing at night and on weekends with daytime bottles of formula.

In either case, a nursing mother is physically tied to her baby more than a bottle-feeding mother. The baby needs her for nourishment, and she needs to nurse regularly to avoid getting uncomfortably full breasts. But instead of feeling it's a chore, nursing mothers often cite this close relationship as one of the greatest joys of nursing.

If a woman is unsure whether she wants to nurse, she can try it for a few weeks and switch if she doesn't like it. It's very difficult to switch to breast-feeding after bottle-feeding is begun.

If she plans to breast-feed, a new mother should learn as much as possible about it before the baby is born. Obstetricians, pediatricians, childbirth instructors, nurses, and midwives can all offer information about nursing. But perhaps the best ongoing support for a nursing mother is someone who has successfully nursed a baby.

A breast-fed baby's digestive tract contains large amounts of Lactobacillus bifidus, beneficial bacteria that prevent the growth of harmful organisms. Human milk straight from the breast is always sterile, never contaminated by polluted water or dirty bottles, which can also lead to diarrhea in the infant.

Human milk contains at least 100 ingredients not found in formula. No babies are allergic to their mother's milk, although they may have a reaction to something the mother eats. If she eliminates it from her diet, the problem resolves itself.

Sucking at the breast promotes good jaw development as well. It's harder work to get milk out of a breast than a bottle, and the exercise strengthens the jaws and encourages the growth of straight, healthy teeth. The baby at the breast also can control the flow of milk by sucking and stopping. With a bottle, the baby must constantly suck or react to the pressure of the nipple placed in the mouth.

Nursing may have psychological benefits for the infant as well, creating an early emotional attachment between mother and child. At birth, infants see only 12 to 15 inches, the distance between a nursing baby and its mother's face. Studies have found that infants as young as 1 week prefer the smell of their own mother's milk. When nursing pads soaked with breast milk are placed in their cribs, they turn their faces toward the one that smells familiar.

Many psychologists believe the nursing baby enjoys a sense of security from the warmth and presence of the mother, especially when there is skin-to-skin contact during feeding. Parents of bottle-fed babies may be tempted to prop bottles in the baby's mouth, with no human contact during feeding. But a nursing mother must cuddle her infant closely many times during the day. Nursing becomes more than a way to feed a baby; it's a source of warmth and comfort.

La Leche League, an international support organization for nursing mothers, has chapters in many cities that meet regularly to discuss breast-feeding problems and offer support.

Most La Leche League chapters allow women to come to a few meetings without charge. League leaders offer advice by phone as well. To find a convenient La Leche League chapter, call 1-800-LA-LECHE (1-800-525-3243) or contact the organization's world wide web site at http://www.lalecheleague.org/.

For many years, scientists have been playing out the ingredients that make breast milk the perfect food for babies. They've discovered to day over 200 close compounds to fight infection, help the immune system mature, aid in digestion, and support brain growth – nature made properties that science simply cannot copy.

The important long term benefits of breast feeding include reduced risk of asthma, allergies, obesity, and some forms of childhood cancer. The more that scientists continue to learn, the better breast milk looks.

In addition to making your baby healthier, breast feeding may also make him smarter. Many studies have proved that breast fed babies tend to be more smarter than babies who were fed with formula or other methods. Breast feeding does help with nutrients and the support of brain growth, which is something every mother should think about.

The benefits for the nursing mom are just as good as they are for the baby. The hormones that are released during breast feeding will curb blood loss post delivery and help to shrink the uterus back to it's normal size.

Long term, the breast feeding mom will have a lower risk for premenopausal breast cancer, which is the kind that strikes before the age of 50. The benefits will begin to show with three to six months of breast feeding and increase the longer that breast feeding continues.

By now, you should realize that breast milk is one power packed liquid. It offers more for your baby than formula, or any other scientific creation for that matter. As you begin to plan for the future of your baby, make a commitment to breast feeding him for as long as you possibly can – as it will do both your bodies good.

Mothers of multiples know that there is nothing more frightening and exciting at the same time than finding out that you're going to give birth to twins. However, breastfeeding twins is not always easy. Breastfeeding one baby can be challenging; breastfeeding more than one is just plain hard.

As difficult as breastfeeding twins can be, it is something that every mother of multiples should try to do. The benefits of breastfeeding your twins outweighs any difficulties that may arise while attempting to breastfeed them.

Every mother of multiples knows that breastfeeding twins can be overwhelming. The responsibility of feeding more than one baby can be scary. You probably worry all the time, wondering if you will produce enough milk to nourish both of them. You may also wonder whether nursing will take too much time, leaving you with nearly no down time. This is not an unrealistic fear. Your twins will likely need to nurse every half hour during the first few weeks.

Once you begin breastfeeding twins, you may feel that your life consists of nothing but feedings and exhaustion. You may experience sore or cracked nipples, engorgement, and a low milk supply.

Worrying about your own diet can get lost in the fray when a woman is breastfeeding twins. However, this is one of the most important things a woman who is breastfeeding twins can do to ensure that her milk flows and her babies are nourished properly.

A nursing mother produces 23 to 27 ounces of milk per day. This burns around 500 calories per day. The quality of milk depends on the quality of the mother's breastfeeding diet. If a mother lacks nourishment, the body makes milk production the highest priority and the mother's own health will suffer.

A breastfeeding mother should have up to 3 quarts of water per day, but should be careful not to overdo it as too much liquid can reduce milk production.

A breastfeeding mother's breastfeeding diet should include 2,500 calories per day. Mothers can eat even more than this if they are planning on breastfeeding for many than three months, up to 2,800 calories per day.

Breastfeeding mothers should include five small meals in their breastfeeding diet. Each meal is an opportunity to drink water, eat low fat dairy products, and a piece of fruit. The caloric intake needs to be regular, so try to keep to a schedule.

If a mother of twins can take care of herself, breastfeeding twins will be a lot easier.

Mothers expecting twins should consider consulting their babies' doctors, lactation specialist, and family and friends shortly after the babies are born.

The sole purpose of breast compression is to continue the flow of milk to the baby once the baby no longer drinks on his own. Compression will also stimulate a let down reflex and often causes a natural let down reflex to occur. This technique may also be useful for the following:

1. Poor weight gain in the baby.
2. Colic in the breast fed baby.
3. Frequent feedings or long feedings.
4. Sore nipples for the mother.
5. Recurrent blocked ducts
6. Feeding the baby who falls asleep quick.

If everything is going well, breast compression may not be necessary. When all is well, the mother should allow the baby to finish feeding on the first side, then if the baby wants more – offer the other side.

How to use breast compression

1. Hold the baby with one arm.
2. Hold the breast with the other arm, thumb on one side of your breast, your finger on the other far back from the nipple
3. Keep an eye out for the baby's drinking, although there is no need to be obsessive about catching every suck. The baby will get more milk when drinking with an open pause type of suck.
4. When the baby is nibbling or no longer drinking, compress the breast, not so hard that it hurts though. With the breast compression, the baby should begin drinking again.
5. Keep up the pressure until the baby no longer drinks with the compression, then release the pressure. If the baby doesn't stop sucking with the release of compression, wait a bit before compressing again.
6. The reason for releasing pressure is to allow your hand to rest, and allow the milk to begin flowing to the baby again. If the baby stops sucking when you release the pressure, he'll start again once he tastes milk.
7. When the baby starts to suck again, he may drink. If not, simply compress again.
8. Continue feeding on the first side until the baby no longer drinks with compression. You should allow him time to stay on that side until he starts drinking again, on his own.
9. If the baby is no longer drinking, allow to come off the breast or take him off.
10. If the baby still wants more, offer the other side and repeat the process as above.
11. Unless you have sore nipples, you may want to switch sides like this several times.
12. Always work to improve the baby's latch.

Not only is breast feeding an adopted baby easy, the chances are that you will produce a large amount of milk. It isn't complicated to do, although it is different than breast feeding a baby you have been pregnant with for 9 months.

Breast feeding and milk There are two objectives that are involved in breast feeding an adopted baby. The first is getting your baby to breast feed, and the other is producing enough breast milk.

There is more to breast feeding than just milk, which is why many mothers are happy to feed without expecting to produce milk in the way the baby needs. It's the closeness and the bond breast feeding provides that many mothers look for.

Taking the breast Even though many feel the early introduction of bottles may interfere with breast feeding, the early introduction of artificial nipples can interfere a great deal. The sooner you can get the baby to the breast after birth, the better things will be.

Babies will however, require the flow from the breast in order to stay attached and continue to suck, especially if they are used to getting flow from a bottle or other method of feeding.

Producing breast milk As soon as you have an adopted baby in sight, contact a lactation clinic and start getting your milk supply ready. Keep in mind, you may never produce a full milk supply for your baby, although it may happen. You should never feel discouraged by what you may be pumping before the baby, as a pump is never quite as good at extracting milk as a baby who is well latched and sucking.

Almost all mothers who breast feed go through a period of questioning whether or not their supply of milk is adequate. Some mothers simply aren't able to produce enough milk to meet the needs of her baby. According to many experts, true insufficiencies of milk are very rare.

A lot of women think their milk supply is low when it actually isn't. Thinking this can happen if you lose the feeling of fullness in your breasts or if the milk stops leaking from your nipples. Babies that go through growth spurts may want more milk than usual, and these more frequent feedings may leave your breasts less than full.

Causes of it A mother's milk supply may diminish for a brief period of time if she isn't feeding her baby often enough due to nipple pain, or a poor latch on technique. Illnesses or estrogen containing birth control pills may also affect the production of milk.

What you should do The best way to handle a low supply of breast milk is through a doctor's care. You should make sure that your baby gets frequent feedings and that nothing is wrong with your nipples or your milk ducts. Doctors are the best ones to ask, as they can run tests to see if everything is fine within your body.

A low supply of breast milk can affect your baby, although it's more of a mental condition than anything else. If your baby isn't gaining any weight or if he is losing weight, you should call a doctor immediately. Improved techniques for breast feeding will normally help, although in some cases weight gain or weight loss will indicate a serious concern.

In most cases, you can still nurse with a temporary decrease in milk supply, although frequent breast feeding is the key to boosting your production of milk.

Breastfeeding in public has been a controversial issue for many years, and yet the issue has come a long way. There was a time when women were not allowed to leave their bedroom when they were pregnant or nursing. It was called being confined.

Breastfeeding in public makes some people very uncomfortable and yet it is one of the most natural and beautiful things that a woman can do to ensure the health and vitality of her baby.

Not only does breastfeeding allow a woman to pass on essential antibodies to the baby so that he or she can fend off dangerous infections and other illnesses, it provides a baby with all the vitamins and nutrients he or she needs to grow healthy and strong. Every time a woman is breastfeeding in public, she is providing an essential service to her baby.

Every baby has a right to eat and breastfeeding in public exercises this right.

Most often, those who are against breastfeeding in public are opposed to it because it makes them feel uncomfortable. And yet, society is filled with images of naked women. In fact, society is full of images of far worse things, including extreme violence, something that should be limited.

Breastfeeding in public, on the other hand, is perfectly natural. It does no harm to the general public and it is not an offensive vision for children either. It is something that is practised by millions of women all over the world every day, and yet it is something that many women are made to feel ashamed about.

If you are concerned about the effect breastfeeding in public could have on people around you, you can try throwing a blanket over your shoulder or removing yourself to a less crowded room or area. On the other hand, some women prefer to breastfeed in public as a way to stand up for women's rights and babies' rights, as well.

If a woman is breastfeeding in public and she is approached by someone, who asks her to leave, then she should know that she has rights that protect her and her child from discrimination.

In this situation, a woman asked to leave because she is breastfeeding in public can exert her right to feed her child. If she wishes to take the matter further or is forced out of the public space anyway, then she has several other courses of action.

She can make a formal complaint to her regional human rights commission, write letters to the editor at the local newspaper, join breastfeeding lobby groups in her area, or write to her government.

Many women find that they can eat whatever they may like during breast feeding. Even though it's true that some stongly favored foods can change the taste of your milk, many babies seem to enjoy the varieties of breast milk flavors. Occasionally, your baby may get cranky at the breast after you eat certain foods. If you notice this happening, simply avoid that particular food.

The most common offenders duing breast feeding include chocolate, spices, citrus fruits, garlic, chili, lime, gassy vegetables, and fruits with laxative type effects, such as prunes and cherries.

You can have a cup or two of coffee a day, although too much caffeine can interfere with your baby's sleep and even make him or her cranky. Keep in mind, caffeine is found in many soda's, tea, and even over the counter type medicine as well.

It's okay to have an alcoholic beverage every now and the, although having more than one drink can increase your blood alcohol level, putting the alcohol into your breast milk.

If you are planning to have more than one drink at a time, it's best to wait two hours or more per drink before you resume any type of nursing or breast feeding. There is no need to pump and dump unless your breasts are full and its time to feed your baby. While breast feeding, any type of heavy drinking should be avoided.

Before you actually omit any foods from your diet, you should talk to your doctor. If you avoid certain foods and it causes a nutritional imbalance, you may need to see a nutritionist for advice on taking other foods or getting nutritional supplements.

Breastfeeding is a natural and beautiful thing that allows a mother to provide her new born baby or babies with everything that is needed for a healthy start to life. Not only does breastfeeding provide babies with the nutritional necessities of life, breastfeeding provides mothers and babies with a chance to bond and establish a loving relationship. It is very important that a mother has a good breastfeeding diet in order to pass on the most benefit to her baby.

Breastfeeding also provides a baby with all the necessary antibodies to fight of many types of infections and other illnesses in infancy and early childhood. It is essential that a mother has an adequate breastfeeding diet so that she can be healthy and strong for her baby.

Breastfeeding is an easy way to give your baby the healthy start that he or she deserves. You're going to want to do it right so that you can pass on the most benefit to your baby. A healthy breastfeeding diet is essential.

Many breastfeeding mothers on breastfeeding diets will be tempted to eat too many sweets. Try to ignore this impulse.

Breastfeeding mothers should avoid alcohol. This passes through the milk in less than an hour, but if the baby consumes it in large quantities, it can retard growth.

Avoid taking any medication during breastfeeding without consulting your doctor. Breastfeeding mothers should also beware of pollutants. This includes nicotine and pesticide residue.

When it is time to sit down to dinner, breastfeeding mothers should eat a variety of foods that are low fat. This means choosing vegetables with a variety of different colours. Remember, your breastfeeding diet is essential to your health and the health of your baby.

Once you return to work, you can continue to breast feed. If you live close to work or have an on site daycare, you may be able to breast feed during your breaks. If that isn't possible, you have 2 choices: 1. Keep your milk supply by using a high quality automatic electric breast pump to express milk during the day. Save your milk that you collect for your baby sitter. 2. If you don't want to or can't pump at work, you can gradually replace daytime feedings with formula while your at home but still continue to nurse at night and in the morning. The milk your body produces may not be enough to keep your baby satisfied, even if you only need enough for 2 feedings.

Advantages of pumping at work Pumping at work will help stimulate your production of milk, so you'll have plenty available when it comes time to feed. You can also collect the milk you pump, so your baby will have the health and nutritional benefits of breast milk even when you aren't there. To make things better, pumping can be an ideal way to feel a connection to your baby during the work day.

Although it can seem like a hassle, many mothers find that the benefits of breast pumping far outweight the inconvenience.

To manage pumping at work, you'll need to have the following: 1. Breast pump, preferably a fully automatic electric pump with a double collection kit so you can pump both breasts simultaneously. 2. Bottles or bags for collecting and storing the milk. 3. Access to a refrigerator or cooler to keep the milk cold until you return home. 4. Breast pads to help protect your clothes if you start to leak.

Make sure that you get used to pumping before you return to work, so you'll know what to expect and how it feels. You'll be much more confident with pumping at work if you already know that you can produce enough milk.

At work, you'll want to have somewhere that's away from everyone else when you pump, such as an empty office or empty room. This way, you'll be away from everyone else and you can have the quiet tranquility you need to pump. In most offices, this shouldn't be a problem.

For the time frame, you'll want to pump every 2 – 3 hours if possible. If you can't, every 4 hours or so will have to suffice. After you have finished pumping, store the milk in the bags or bottles, clean yourself up, then go back to work. When you return home, you can feed the milk to your growing baby.

The first few weeks after your baby is born will be a bit hectic and you won't want to have to run to the store to pick up any baby items you forgot or didn't realize you needed. At least a month before your baby is born, in case she comes early, you should have everything you need for at least the first few weeks. Although some of these items are optional, you may want to consider them or what you will use in place of them. Don't get too caught up with extra items you aren't sure you'll use because although something like a wipe warmer sounds like a good idea now, they aren't all that practical.

Clothing your baby
You will be amazed at the rate your baby goes through clothes. Between spitting up and leaking through their diapers, your baby will go through several outfits every day. Make sure you have a good selection of the following items for your baby: Bibs, socks, sleepers, gowns, hats, bodysuits, pants, blankets, and t-shirts. A few of each of these items should do. You might want to invest in a few more sleepers, gowns and blankets as you will be going through them like water during the first few weeks after your baby arrives.

Diapers and such
You will go through 10-12 diapers a day, at least at first, so be sure to stock up on plenty of these before your baby gets here. You may want to get at least one package of preemie or newborn diapers for the first few days. Newborns can be extremely small and don't always fit into the first size of diapers right away. You will also want to have plenty of wipes on hand; sometimes you will need quite a few for just one diaper change! You should also have diaper rash ointment, thermometer, respirator (though you'll usually get one at the hospital), nail clippers and a diaper pail.

The diaper bag
The diaper bag is an essential part of taking your baby out, even if only for a few minutes. Always make sure you have your bag packed with a few diapers, wipes, changing pad, extra change of clothes, socks, rattle or toy, an extra bib or two and a blanket. You may want to throw 10 or 20 dollars in your bag for "just in case" money, you never know when you are going to lose a bottle or need another pacifier.

Feeding essentials
If you are planning on breastfeeding, you really don't need anything unless you plan on pumping, in which case you would need to invest in a breast pump, storage baggies and bottles. If you plan on bottle feeding, even if it's only part time, you will need to stock up on supplies to ensure you don't run out of anything when your baby needs to be fed. Buy both small and large bottles, sometimes your baby will be hungrier than others. You will also need a short list of essential items such as: bottle liners or brushes, plenty of formula and a bottle warmer and sterilizer.

Breastfeeding and questions are two things that go together very well.

Breastfeeding can be tough for new moms and that is why many women experience breastfeeding problems. Sometimes it can seem that all a mother has are breastfeeding and questions.

Breastfeeding isn't always easy. It arrives during a very stressful period in a mother's life. Shortly after the birth of a baby, a woman is faced with new challenges. She has just undergone intense physical changes to her body and she may be fatigued from physical and mental exhaustion. And yet, she is given the important task of caring for a tiny infant. It is her only job for days, weeks and months following a birth to feed and care for a baby. Many women experience breastfeeding problems during this time.

Things become even more stressful for new mothers when they experience depression after giving birth. For mothers who babies are not well, life is even more stressful. And, when baby is having difficulty breastfeeding, or refuses to nurse, mothers can feel helpless.

This is a period of time filled with breastfeeding and questions.

If breastfeeding problems arise, breastfeeding stories can be really helpful to mothers who are breastfeeding or trying to breastfeed their infants. Those mothers who feel as though breastfeeding and questions about breastfeeding are all they have to think about, will find comfort talking to other women about it.

Breastfeeding stories can be funny, serious, dramatic, and frightening and can carry with them a variety of other emotions. And, breastfeeding stories can help mothers in all types of situations to relate to others and deal with the stress of taking care of a new baby and any present breastfeeding problems.

Telling breastfeeding stories provides women with an opportunity to discuss breastfeeding and questions about breastfeeding.

Breastfeeding stories can help mothers who are trying to wean their babies give up the close and intimate contact that they have enjoyed for so many months. Hearing that other mothers also have difficulty weaning their children can help them to overcome any breastfeeding problems that they are experiencing.

Breastfeeding stories can also help mothers who cannot get their babies to feed. Listening to the stories of other women who have had difficulty breastfeeding their babies can help women to overcome such a problem. Other women may be able to provide women who are having difficulty with helpful hints for encouraging a baby to feed or provide helpful resources and support

Just listening to other women tell their breastfeeding stories reminds a new mother that she is not alone. Breastfeeding and questions don't have to seem so overwhelming. She will realize that many other women have experienced the same difficulties and emotions. Many other women have had trouble learning how to breastfeed properly, or have found it difficult to establish such a powerful bond with their babies.

The milk production in the breasts, much like so many other things, work on the shear principal of supply and demand. The more breast milk your baby consumes, the more your body will need to make.

Breast pumps are generally used to insure continued production of breast milk when you cannot feed your baby – whether you are back to work, traveling, taking medication, or just out of town.

Basic types of pumps Breast pumps can either be battery operated, hand operated, semi automatic electric, or even self cycling electric.

Hand pumps Manual hand pumps are designed to use the strength of your hand or arm muscles for pumping one breast at a time. You can also get pumps that will use the leg and foot muscles for pumping both breasts at one time. Mothers that with carpal tunnel syndrome may want to consider using a pump designed for the arm or leg muscles or even an automatic model.

Battery operated pumps Pumps with battery operation are the best for women who have an established supply of milk and want to pump once or even twice a day. These pumps use batteries to create suction, minimizing any type of muscle fatigue. Most battery type pumps are designed for pumping one breast at a time and are recommended for occasional usage.

Electric pumps Even though electric pumps are more efficient than hand or even battery operated pumps, they also tend to be more expensive. You can however, rent them if you need to. Electric pumps can normally plug directly into an outlet and are designed for pumping both breasts at a time and even frequent use. Hospital grade pumps are the most efficient for initiating and maintaining milk supply, and are available for rent or purchase.

Illegal drugs and breastfeeding are two things that do not go together well. Unfortunately, as more and more women are realizing the benefits of breastfeeding, there are more and more women who begin breastfeeding during periods of time when they are also using illegal drugs.

As a nursing mother, there are three things that you should know about drugs and breast milk.

First, illegal drugs and breastfeeding are harmful to your baby. Nearly all drugs consumed by a nursing mother are passed into human breast milk.

Second, almost all legal medication ingested by the mother appears in very small amounts in the breast milk; this amount is usually less than 1%.

Third, very few drugs are contraindicated for nursing mothers.

The issue of illegal drugs and breastfeeding is complicated.

A nursing mother can ingest drugs in several different ways. A mother can consume drugs orally, intravenously, intramuscularly, topically or though inhalation. When it comes to illegal drugs and breastfeeding, those taken intravenously or intramuscularly cause the most damage to the baby. This is because these drugs do not go through the mother's GI tract on their way to the breast milk.

When it comes to taking illegal drugs and breastfeeding, mothers should know that the more illegal drugs she ingests results in increased amounts of illegal drugs entering their baby's mouth through their breast milk. The amount of illegal drugs that reaches the baby also depends on how often the nursing mother takes the drug.

The rate at which the illegal drugs will affect the baby are determined by the age and maturity level of the infant. For instance, premature babies have immature kidney and liver functions and will not be able to process or eliminate illegal drugs from their bodies. Babies who are several months old will be able to handle foreign substances in their breast milk, but they can still suffer irreparable injury.

When it comes to illegal drugs and breast feeding, the amount of drug that reaches the baby is also related to the frequency of feedings. A baby who nurses once or twice a day and feeds from the bottle the rest of the time, will receive less drugs than a baby who nurses from the breast all of the time.

Then benefits of breastfeeding are well known and undisputed. A doctor should recommend that a woman wean her baby only if the drugs being ingested are harmful to the infant. In the case of illegal drugs and breastfeeding, this is almost always the case.

When you hold your baby for the first time in the delivery room, you should put his lips to your breast. Although your mature milk hasn't developed yet, your breasts are still producing a substance known as colostrum that helps to protect your baby from infections.

If your baby has trouble finding or staying on your nipple, you shouldn't panic. Breast feeding is an art that will require a lot of patience and a lot of practice. No one expects you to be an expert when you first start, so you shouldn't hesitate to ask for advice or have a nurse show you what you need to do.

Once you start, keep in mind that nursing shouldn't be painful. When your baby latches on, pay attention to how your breasts feel. If the latching on hurts, break the suction then try again.

You should nurse quite frequently, as the more you nurse the more quickly your mature milk will come in and the more milk you'll produce. Breast feeding for 10 – 15 minutes per breast 8 – 10 times every 24 hours is an ideal target. Crying is a sign of hunger, which means you should actually feed your baby before he starts crying.

During the first few days, you may have to wake your baby to begin breast feeding, and he may end up falling asleep during feeding. To ensure that your baby is eating often enough, you should wake him up if it has been four hours since the last time he has been fed.

Getting comfortable Feedings can take 40 minutes or longer, therefore you'll want a cozy spot. You don't want to be sitting somewhere where you will be bothered, as it can make the process very hard.

Breastfeeding also provides a baby with all the necessary antibodies to fight of many types of infections and other illnesses in infancy and early childhood.

Breastfeeding is an easy way to give your baby the healthy start that he or she deserves. Following are some simple instructions to teach you how to properly feed your baby.

First, sit in a comfortable position with your back straight and your lap flat. If you wish, you can position a pillow on your lap to support your baby during breastfeeding.

Now to position your baby properly during breastfeeding, turn your baby's body toward your stomach. In this position, your baby's bottom should be resting on your elbow and your baby's head, neck and shoulders should be supported by your forearm and hand.

To begin breastfeeding, position your baby's nose directly in front of your nipple. Allow your baby's head to tip back gently and slightly. Then gently rub your baby's lips against your nipple until his or her mouth opens very wide.

At this point during breastfeeding you should quickly bring your baby's bottom lip and chin against your breast. In this position, your baby can breathe easily. You should be able to feel the baby's mouth on a large portion of your breast.

You may need to support your breast to make your baby more comfortable during breastfeeding. It is also important that you are comfortable. You should be relaxed and you should be able to hear your baby swallowing softly.

If it doesn't feel right, you should stop and start over.

Your baby will love to breastfeed, but will stop when he or she has had enough. If you are having difficulty breastfeeding your baby, just relax and ask someone for help. It is not always an easy process and some mothers or babies don't take to breastfeeding right away. It may take some time to get used to it.

Keep in mind that it can more difficult to breastfeed a baby if you keep switching between formula and breast milk. Breastfeeding is the best way to give your baby all the nutrients and protection he or she needs, but you will need to take care of your body by eating a healthy and balanced diet.

To learn more about breastfeeding, look for a support group in your area, or contact your midwife, health visitor or general practitioner.

Jaundice is a result of buildup in the blood of the bilirubin, a yellow pigment that comes from the breakdown of older red blood cells. It's normal for the red blood cells to break down, although the bilirubin formed doesn't normally cause jaundice because the liver will metabolize it and then get rid of it in the gut.

However, the newborn baby will often become jaundiced during the first few days due to the liver enzyme that metabolizes the bilirubin becoming relatively immature. Therefore, newborn babies will have more red blood cells than adults, and thus more will break down at any given time.

Breast milk jaundice There is a condition that's commonly referred to as breast milk jaundice, although no one knows what actually causes it. In order to diagnose it, the baby should be at least a week old. The baby should also be gaining well with breast feeding alone, having lots of bowel movements with the passing of clean urine.

In this type of setting, the baby has what is referred to as breast milk jaundice. On occasion, infections of the urine or an under functioning of the baby's thyroid gland, as well as other rare illnesses that may cause the same types of problems.

Breast milk jaundice will peak at 10 – 21 days, although it can last for 2 – 3 months. Contrary to what you may think, breast milk jaundice is normal. Rarely, if at all ever, does breast feeding need to be stopped for even a brief period of time.

If the baby is doing well on breast milk, there is no reason at all to stop or supplement with a lactation aid.

Choosing the method of feeding your baby is a decision that you make on your own. Do not listen to other people who are trying to talk you into breast or bottle-feeding using guilt as a motivator. Your baby needs food and whichever method you choose to give her, she will get the nutrition that she needs. The cuddling and bonding that you do during the feeding is the most important thing.

Breast milk is a complete and perfect food for your baby, but if you choose to feed your baby formula you are not harming her and you are are not a bad mom. Most pediatricians prefer breastfeeding, but there are women who are unable to breastfeed or are unable to feed their baby as often as they are told is necessary.

Parents feed their babies on a flexible routine of every two to three hours using the method of parent-directed feeding (PDF). Crying is seen as a late hunger cue, so don't use it as your primary cue that your child is hungry. Some newborns can go as much as six hours between feedings, which is inadequate for their nutrition. This is why waiting for your baby to cry may lead to an undernourished baby who will not thrive. Another thing to remember is that undernourished babies may lack the energy to cry and the cycle then goes on and on.

How can you breastfeed using the PDF method? You establish the routine. Most of the time, newborns can go 2 1/2 to 3 hours between feedings. This time starts from the beginning of one feeding to the beginning of the next feeding. Allow the baby to latch on properly and allow the baby to nurse. Your child will get foremilk, watery thin milk with vitamins and minerals, first.

While your baby drinks the foremilk, you will experience letdown where your glands will release the rest of the milk that is stored. At times, this is tingly or painful, but many moms have no sensation. The rest of the milk is known as hindmilk that is rich and full of fat and nutrients. To best way to determine whether you have achieved letdown, is that your baby will be consistently and rhythmically swallowing. After your milk comes in, most moms can breastfeed for fifteen minutes on each breast, which will allow your baby to receive the hindmilk that she needs to grow!

Almost all women don't have a problem with producing enough milk to breast feed. The ideal way to make sure that your baby is getting enough milk is to be sure that he's well positioned, attached to the breast, and feed him as often as he gets hungry.

Some mom's that are breast feeding will stop before they want to, simply because they don't think they have enough breast milk.

There are signs that might make you believe your baby isn't getting enough milk. If your baby seems hungry or unsettled after feeding, or if he wants to feed often with short pauses between feedings, you may think he isn't getting enough milk – which are often times not the case.

There are however, two reliable signs that let you know your baby isn't getting enough milk. If your baby has poor or really slow weight gain, or is passing small amounts of concentrated urine, he's not getting enough milk.

All babies will lose weight within the first few days after birth. Babies are born with supplies of fat and fluids, which will help them keep going for the first several days.

Once your baby regains birth weight, he should begin putting on around 200g for the first four months or so. To get back to their birth weight, it normally takes a few weeks.

If the weight gain for your baby seems to be slow, don't hesitate to ask your doctor or nurse to observe you breast feeding. This way, they can make sure that your technique is right and if they think your baby is breast feeding often enough.

To help you with your breast feeding, here are some ways that you can increase your supply of milk: 1. Be sure that your baby is positioned correctly and attached to your breast. 2. Let your baby feed for as long and often as he wants. 3. If you feel that your baby isn't breast feeding enough, offer him more breast feeds. 4. During each breast feed, make sure you feed from both breasts. 5. If your baby has been using a dummy, make sure you stop him. 6. Some babies may be sleepy and reluctant to feed, which may be the cause of problems with milk supply.

By following the above tips, you'll do your part in making sure you have enough milk when it comes time to breast feed. If you are uncertain or have other questions, be sure to ask your doctor, as he can answer any type of question you may have.

Feeding your baby should be easy, right? When he is hungry, you feed him. What is the problem with that? The problem is that there are many different feeding methods that are thrown at new moms. Here are just a few:

* Demand-feeding
* Hyper-scheduling
* Cry feeding
* Demand schedule
* Self-regulating schedule
* Rigid feeding
* Cue (responsive) feeding
* Parent-directed feeding

Are you confused? Many moms get confused so they do it their own way. Groups promote certain feeding methods based on politics and their own philosophy. There are still other people who will tell you that you are a bad parent for even considering feeding formula to your baby, no matter what your reasons are.

This is not to condemn you for choosing what to feed your baby. This is just to help you become aware of all of the options of feeding that you can use.

Choosing your method of feeding will have an overall affect on your baby's hunger patterns, sleep patterns, and mood. In PDF, we are not talking about being ruled by the clock but by having a flexible schedule. This is a good choice usually for the baby and the mom and helps to take some of the stress involved in feeding and parenting away.

PDF is on the middle of the spectrum between demand-feeding (feeding when your baby cries) and hyper-scheduling (letting the clock dictate feeding). PDF is more baby-oriented than the other feeding methods and the baby learns to follow mom's flexible schedule.

PDF takes the common sense and the ability to not let yourself be ruled by the clock and The Rules that are laid down by pediatricians or other advice givers. I am not saying that you shouldn't feed your baby if he is hungry. You definitely should feed him and give him his nutrition. I am also not saying that you should make your baby wait if he is hungry. You will learn to meet your child's needs without being committed to the clock or someone else's ideas of feeding your baby. This will give you freedom to enjoy your baby and your life!

There are very few medical reasons why a mother shouldn't breast-feed, according to Lawrence.

Most common illnesses, such as colds, flu, skin infections, or diarrhea, cannot be passed through breast milk. In fact, if a mother has an illness, her breast milk will contain antibodies to it that will help protect her baby from those same illnesses.

A few viruses can pass through breast milk, however. HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, is one of them. Women who are HIV positive should not breast-feed.

A few other illnesses–such as herpes, hepatitis, and beta streptococcus infections–can also be transmitted through breast milk. But that doesn't always mean a mother with those diseases shouldn't breast-feed, Lawrence says.

"Each case must be evaluated on an individual basis with the woman's doctor," she says.

Breast cancer is not passed through breast milk. Women who have had breast cancer can usually breast-feed from the unaffected breast. Studies have shown, however, that breast-feeding a child reduces a woman's chance of developing breast cancer later.

Silicone breast implants usually do not interfere with a woman's ability to nurse, but if the implants leak, there is some concern that the silicone may harm the baby. Some small studies have suggested a link between breast-feeding with implants and later development of problems with the child's esophagus. Further studies are needed in this area. But if a woman with implants wants to breast-feed, she should first discuss the potential benefits and risks with her child's doctor.

Formula Choices

If the mother cannot or chooses not to breast-feed, normal, full-term infants should get a conventional cow's-milk-based formula, according to John N. Udall Jr., M.D., chief of nutrition and gastroenterology at Children's Hospital of New Orleans. However, adverse reactions to the protein in cow's milk formula or symptoms of lactose intolerance (lactose is the carbohydrate in cow's milk) may require switching to another type of formula, he says.

Symptoms that may indicate an adverse reaction to cow's milk protein include vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and rash. With lactose intolerance, the most common symptoms are excessive gas, abdominal distension and pain, and diarrhea. Since some of the symptoms overlap, a stool test may be necessary to determine the culprit. Usually, lactose intolerance will produce acidic stools that contain glucose. If the protein is the problem, stools will be nonacidic and have flecks of blood.

The main alternative to cow's milk formula is soy formula.

The carbohydrates in most soy formulas are sucrose and corn syrup, which are easily digested and absorbed by infants. However, soy is not as good a protein source as cow's milk. Also, babies don't absorb some minerals, such as calcium, as efficiently from soy formulas. Therefore, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, "Healthy full-term infants should be given soy formula only when medically necessary."

For a child who can't tolerate cow's milk protein, William J. Klish, M.D., a Baylor College of Medicine pediatrician and former chairman of the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Nutrition recommends the use of hydrolyzed-protein formula. Although hydrolyzed-protein formulas are made from cow's milk, the protein has been broken up into its component parts. Essentially, it's been predigested, which decreases the likelihood of an allergic reaction.

When your baby has stopped breast feeding and gets all of his nutrition from other sources than the breast, he's actually considered weaned. Even though babies are also weaned from the bottle as well, the term weaning often refers to when a baby is stopped from breast feeding.

When weaning is a mother's idea, it normally requires a lot of patience and can take time, depending on the age of your baby or toddler, and also how well your child adjusts. The overall experience is different for everyone.

Weaning is a long goodbye, sometimes emotional and sometimes painful. It doesn't however, signal fo the end to the intimacy you and your child have developed during the nursing stage. What it means, is that you have to replace breast feeding with other types of nourishment.

Starting weaning Your the best judge as to when it's the right time to wean, and you don't really have a deadline unless you and your child are actually ready to wean. The recommended time for weaning is one year. No matter what relatives, friends, or even complete strangers tell you, there is no right or wrong time for weaning.

How to wean You should proceed slowly, regardless of what the age of your child may be. Experts say that you shouldn't abruptly withhold your breast, as they results can be traumatic. You should however, try these methods instead: 1. Skip a feeding – Skip a feeding and see what happens, offering a cup of milk to your baby instead. As a substitue, you can use a bottle of your own pumped milk, formula, or a cow's milk. If you reduce feedings one at a time, your child will eventually adjust to the changes. 2. Shorten feeding time – You can start by cutting the length of time your child is actually at the breast. If the normal feeding time is 5 minuts, try 3. Depending on the age, follow the feeding with a healthy snack. Bed time feedings are usually the hardest to wean, as they are normally the last to go. 3. Postpone and distract – You can postpone feedings if you are only feeding a couple of times per day. This method works great if you have an older child you can actually reason with. If your child wants the breast, say that you'll feed later then distract him.

If you've tried everything and weaning doesn't seem to be working at all, maybe the time just isn't right. You can wait just a bit longer to see what happens, as your child and you have to determine the right time to wean together.

Within the first two to three days after you have given birth, you may discover that your breasts feel swollen, tender, throbbing, lumpy, and overly full. Sometimes, the swelling will extend all the way to your armpit, and you may run a low fever as well.

The causes Within 72 hours of giving birth, an abundance of milk will come in or become available to your baby. As this happens, more blood will flow to your breasts and some of the surrounding tissue will swell. The result is full, swollen, engorged breasts.

Not every postpartum mom experienced true engorgement. Some women's breasts become only slightly full, while others find their breasts have become amazingly hard. Some women will hardly notice the pain, as they are involved in other things during the first few days.

Treating it Keep in mind, engorgement is a positive sign that you are producing milk to feed to your baby. Until you produce the right amount: 1. Wear a supportive nursing bra, even at night – making sure it isn't too tight. 2. Breast feed often, every 2 – 3 hours if you can. Try to get the first side of your breasts as soft as possible. If your baby seems satisfied with just one breast, you can offer the other at the next feeding. 3. Avoid letting your baby latch on and suck when the areola is very firm. To reduce the possibility of nipple damage, you can use a pump until your areola softens up. 4. Avoid pumping milk except when you need to soften the areola or when your baby is unable to latch on. Excessive pumping can lead to the over production of milk and prolonged engorgement. 5. To help soothe the pain and relieve swelling, apply cold packs to your breasts for a short amount of time after you nurse. Crushed ice in a plastic bag will also work. 6. Look ahead. You'll get past this engorgement in no time and soon be able to enjoy your breast feeding relationship with your new baby.

Engorgement will pass very quickly. You can expect it to diminish within 24 – 48 hours, as nursing your baby will only help the problem. If you aren't breast feeding, it will normally get worse before it gets better. Once the engorgement has passed, your breasts will be softer and still full of milk.

During this time, you can and should continue to nurse. Unrelieved engorgement can cause a drop in your production of milk, so it's important to breast feed right from the start. Keep an eye for signs of hunger and feed him when he needs to be fed.

Every baby needs to be burped during their feedings until they are able to support themselves sitting up and are able to burp on their own.

Babies that are bottle-fed usually need to be burped every half-ounce or so when they are newborns. By the time they are four to six months old, they will probably drink six to eight ounces before they need to burp. Babies that are breastfed are usually nursed between switching breasts and are usually able to complete feeding before needing to burp when they are four to six months old.

Spitting up is common with both breastfed and bottle-fed babies. If you think your baby is spitting up too much of her meal, then you need to discuss this with your pediatrician.

You can burp your baby several different ways:
* Put baby on your knee and place your palm around her chest, with your fingers supporting her head. Use your other hand to gently pat her back with a cupped hand.

* Put baby high on your shoulder with heads and arms dangling over your shoulder. Keep a tight hold on her so that she does not wiggle away and gently pat her back.

* While you are sitting, put your baby over your thigh, while supporting her upper chest and head with one hand and keeping her feet between your legs. Use a cupped hand to pat her back gently.

* Cradle baby in your arms with her bottom in your hands. Wrap one leg and arm around your arm and face her away from you. Use other hand to pat her back.

If your baby needs a dose of simethicone, then do not hesitate to give it to her. You cannot overdose her and it will help with gas pains. If your baby has bad gas then you can help her by bending her knees to her chest and using a light rocking motion. It will help relieve the gas and make her much happier.

Feedings at night should be dictated by your baby unless otherwise directed by your pediatrician. Let her wake up when she wants to eat. Most newborns will go three to four hours at night before needing to eat and this time will gradually increase until you get complete nights sleep!

The first week that she is home, you will probably have a hard time keeping her awake enough to eat, but that is to be expected. Keeping her awake long enough to feed should be your goal this first week. By the second week, she will most likely be more alert for feedings.

How you live your life can be a hindrance to your routine. Is your life scheduled and organized or do you live in chaos and do things as they happen? Keeping your routine flexible is very important for your baby because they sometimes will not follow a schedule. A flexible schedule does not mean that you live in chaos, it just means that you may have to slightly alter your schedule to meet your baby's needs.

Your baby goes through several stages. Let's look at them.

Stage 1: Stabilization-birth through 8 weeks
If you are breastfeeding, your main goal should be establishing milk production. Your baby's goal should be establishing sleep and wake cycles.
Set a routine up for your baby's eating patterns so that you can decide when you need to run to the store, etc. Setting the time of her first feeding of the day can determine the rest of your daily routine.

Stage 2: Extended Night-9-15 weeks
At this age, a breastfed baby may be able to sleep at night from 9 to 10 hours and a bottle fed baby can go about 11 hours. This is when you get to start sleeping through the night again.
Your baby's bedtime will be adjusted to be closer to the early-evening feeding. By the time she is around 3 months old, your baby should be eating around five or six times a day, but never less than four times.

Stage 3: Extended Day-16-24 weeks
Usually between 16-24 weeks, you will begin your child on solid food. Your pediatrician will let you know when you need to do this. By the time your baby is six months old, then their feeding times usually line up with family mealtimes, in addition to the extra bottles that she needs.

Stage 4: Extended Routine-25-52 weeks
During this period, your baby will eat three meals a day, along with a bottle before bed. She should be having two naps each day that range from 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hours each.

A baby's cries for milk can come at any time and breastfeeding blankets can make the whole experience a lot easier.

Breastfeeding blankets are designed to be convenient and comfortable. They make baby's access to the breasts quick, easy and discreet. Whether it is a specially designed to be thrown over the shoulder or to provide soft comfort to mom and baby, breastfeeding blankets can make the early months of motherhood a lot easier.

One of the most necessary pieces of breastfeeding supplies that a nursing mother requires are good quality breastfeeding blankets. This is one of the most important of the breastfeeding supplies.

A nursing mother requires many breastfeeding blankets. During feeding, babies often spit up or burp up milk. Absorbent breastfeeding blankets, clean up the mess quickly and easily. Each blanket is created with soft and comfortable cotton to sooth baby's sensitive skin and to provide mom with a quick clean up to feeding.

Breastfeeding blankets are easy to wash and use and nursing mothers can easily tuck one or two in a diaper bag for any spontaneous feedings or feedings required during outings.

Also, mothers who like to be more discreet during feeding can use breastfeeding blankets to cover up their breasts while still providing their babies with the necessary nourishment and comfort.

Aside from breastfeeding blankets, nursing mothers can purchase a variety of other breastfeeding products, which can be used for breastfeeding.

There are many breastfeeding nightgowns, breastfeeding shirts and breastfeeding bras available on the market today. One of the most popular of these is the breastfeeding bra. There are many different styles of maternity, nursing or breastfeeding bras.

For many women, it is important to wear a breastfeeding bra, because the bra can reduce stretching of tissues that can result in sagging. Women with larger breasts are usually more comfortable wearing one.

Many women will prefer to be fitted for a breastfeeding bra. The breasts begin to prepare for lactation early on in the pregnancy and some women will outgrow their usual bra size earlier than others. Usually, most of the changes to the breasts have occurred by around four months gestation, which is a good time to be fitted.

A correctly fitted breastfeeding bra gives a mother comfort and support, so it is a good idea to get professional fitted, especially since it is a free service.

Every nursing mother should invest in top notch breastfeeding accessories, including breastfeeding blankets, which can make nursing more comfortable and convenient for mothers and babies. .

Babies that are breast fed are very portable and easy to comfort no matter where your schedule has you going. Many women however, worry about breast feeding in public. The worry of nursing in a public place is normally worse than the actual experience and often times the only people who notice you feeding are the other mothers who are doing the same thing.

Many women find ways to breast feed discreetly. You can ask your partner or even a friend to stand in front of you while you lift your shirt from the waist. When you breast feed, the baby's body will cover most of your upper body and you can pull your shirt down to her face to cover the tops of your breast. Some mothers prefer to put a light blanket over their shoulders as a type of cover.

When you are visiting someone else's home, you may feel more comfortable either leaving the room or turning away from people when you first put the baby to your breast. If you would like more privacy, breast feed in an empty room, car, or public restroom.

A lot of restrooms are becoming more baby friendly and they even have a seperate are with a changing table and a chair. Several shopping malls now offer special mother's rooms where the mom can breast feed her baby in privacy, which will help sensitive babies who are too distracted by feeding to nurse well in public. It won't take long at all though, before your baby will learn to breast feed without any fuss at all.

An alternative way is expressing or pumping your milk at home and then offer it in a bottle while in public. Keep in mind, offering bottles with artificial nipples in the first few weeks can and probably will interfere with breast feeding.

When breast feeding in public, you should always use what works best for you. During the first few weeks, it will take some getting used to, as it will be as new for you as it is for the baby. With some time, you'll have no problems at all.

If you don't feel comfortable breast feeding in a certain location, then you shouldn't. You should feel a certain level of comfort when you feed, as the baby can tell when you aren't comfortable doing something. If you show your baby that you aren't nervous – you and your baby will be just fine.

Being pregnant doesn't mean you have to stop breastfeeding your child. Long ago doctors believed it actually took nutrients away from the baby inside you, however that is not the case. Even today we have people that believe this and they will argue with you the entire time. Only you can decide if you should stop breastfeeding your toddler or not. Don't let someone else make that decision for you.

Reasons to Stop

A few reasons you might want to stop breastfeeding may be if you are feeling constantly drained of energy. Or maybe your child has started to bite. Sometimes your milk will just dry up, this is your body's way of telling you that it has had enough and to take a break. Mastitis could play a big role in making you stop immediately as well. Mastitis is an infection in the breast when it isn't expressed enough and gets engorged.

Stopping or Weaning

If you do plan on stopping because you are pregnant, make sure it is for the right reasons. If your child has reached a certain age, it might be best. But never just yank it away from them. Your child could wonder why it is being taken away. Wonder if they had done something or become discouraged about the new baby coming. Some children decide to wean themselves, which is a big help to you and you won't feel so guilty about it. You can choose to do it cold turkey, or slowly wean him/her off. Cold turkey can have some bad results. Try limiting his/her feeding times to certain hours and gradually as time passes take away more. Your child will quickly stop on his/her own and it won't be a traumatic event.

Continuing to Feed

If you do plan on continuing to breastfeed while you are pregnant, talk with your doctor about it. Not all the time will the doctor agree with your decision. Sometimes he/she may see something in your health that you don't. Listen carefully and find out if it is a health reason or simply his/her own belief. If it is the doctors belief, you can always seek out one that agrees with you. Being pregnant is hard enough at times, knowing you have someone in your corner will only relieve the stress. Don't be surprised if your family and friends want to say something about it and they will probably give you all kind of advice on how to stop and what they've read. Nicely explain to them it is your decision and you'll do what you think is best for your children. Try finding a support group in your area so you have someone to vent to or talk about these issues. Check out if there is a La Leche League near you or online that you can join.

Remember that as long as you take proper care of yourself and your body, you'll be able to safely breastfeed while pregnant.

Many people have a clear cut idea on how much time they want to have between their children. Some are eager to have their family completed in a relatively short period of time, while others feel it is better to have some space and distance in developmental stages. There is no right or wrong way to plan a family, however those women who are interested in getting pregnant while breastfeeding will probably find it useful to be aware of some of the challenges involved with pregnancy while lactating.

It is far easier to get pregnant while breastfeeding after the baby is six months old. Many breastfeeding moms don't ovulate or have periods for quite some time when the infant is very young. Obviously without these functions happening, getting pregnant while breastfeeding is improbable. Each breastfeeding woman is different and some resume their periods as early as three months after delivery and others can wait up to a year.

Let's look at some numbers to get a clearer grasp of the difficulties involved in getting pregnant while breastfeeding. When a woman breastfeeds her body produces high levels of the hormone prolactin. This hormone is responsible for suppressing ovulation. The suppressed ovulation reduces the chance of pregnancy to one or two percent. Considering a non-lactating woman only has a twenty percent chance to begin with, the challenge here is obvious. When the baby is a little older, around the six-month age, fertility comes in with a 6% pregnancy chance.

There are some things you can try to aid in getting pregnant while breastfeeding. These are geared toward older babies and toddlers. Very young infants rely solely on breast milk for nutrition and it should not be limited in any way. If the baby is of an appropriate age, it may be advantageous to introduce more solid foods into the baby's diet to supplement your mild supply. In this way the levels of prolactin will decrease along with the breast milk supply potentially increasing the odds of pregnancy. Timing could be everything in this situation and stretching out the time in between feedings during the day and night may be helpful.

Once menstruation begins again, regularly charting your ovulation cycle may assist in getting pregnant while breastfeeding. There are charts, kits, and calendars all designed to help designate the correct days for conception. Understand though that ovulation can be unpredictable especially for a breastfeeding mom.

Creating your family, as you and your partner want it to be is important, but be patient during the process of getting pregnant while breastfeeding. All good things come in time.

Breastfeeding is one of the best things that a woman can do for her baby. It is an experience that allows mother and baby to bond in a loving and intimate way. It also provides the mother with a way to pass on essential nutrients and antibodies to her baby, to ensure he or she grows healthy and strong and has the ability to fight off dangerous infections and other illnesses. That is why it is so important for a mother to have all the necessary breastfeeding supplies.

For many mothers, the most important of the breastfeeding supplies is the breastfeeding pump. The breastfeeding pump allows a mother to provide her baby with all the necessary nutrients and antibodies when she can't, either because she is away from her baby or because she is physically unable to for a time.

If you think that a breastfeeding pump is one of the breastfeeding supplies that could be beneficial to you, then you will need to know about the variety of pumps available to you.

First, there is a hand or foot operated pump. This is the most inexpensive type that is portable and comfortable. These pumps are good for occasional pumping, but are difficult for regular use.

Second, there are electrical breast pumps with power derived from a battery or an outlet or both. Two common versions are available, including the semi-automatic and the fully automatic.

Third and lastly, there are hospital grade breastfeeding pumps. This type is significantly superior and effortless to use. It can be rented or purchased and is designed for quick and natural pumping action.

When employing the breastfeeding and pumps technique, ensure that you are using the right pump, appropriate to the number of hours you are away from your baby. The pump should pull and release your nipple fifty times per minute, slightly more than a second for each cycle.

There are other breastfeeding supplies that can be beneficial to mothers who are breastfeeding their babies. This includes such items as breastfeeding bras and undergarments, as well as breastfeeding nightgowns or shirts.

There are even fun and pretty breastfeeding supplies, like a breastfeeding bracelet that allows a mother to keep track of her baby's feeding schedule and which breast was last nursed.

If you're looking for information about breastfeeding or breastfeeding supplies, contact your midwife or general practitioner. These people can help you to breastfeed properly and ensure that you have the supplies to help you.
