Birth Control's effect on cholesterol
Birth control does affect the cholesterol levels in our body considerably. The effect on cholesterol depends upon the dosage of the hormone in the capsule. The amount of estrogen or progestin decides the changes the cholesterol level in out bodies. The oral contraceptives that have only estrogen provide a boost to the high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and the LDL decreases considerably. The HDL is considered to be the good cholesterol that is required by our body and the LDL is the harmful cholesterol that leads to heart diseases. The effect of the estrogen containing pills is that the overall count of triglyceride cholesterol rises. The pills with traces of progestin do exactly the opposite and increase the content of LDL in our body. The pills with a higher concentration of estrogen can prove slightly beneficial and elevate our body's' blood lipid levels. Anyway taking an overview of the studies, no drastic change is noticed.
