Acne birth control treatment

Acne is a disorder that is caused due to outbreaks of skin lesions commonly called pimples. It is caused by the skin's oil glands making too much sebum, an oily substance, which leads to plugged pores. Another cause can be the rapid production of a bacteria P. acnes. Acne lesions occur mostly on the face, neck, back, chest, and shoulders. It is the most common skin disease. Although acne is not a serious health threat, severe acne can lead to disfiguring and permanent scarring .A low dose of birth control pill can be used to control acne. It is not recommended for birth control, because of its low-dosage. It however remains unclear whether hormones or heredity is the largest factor in acne disease.

Advantages and disadvantages of using birth control pills for acne:

There are some major advantages and disadvantages as well of using birth control pills for acne. There is a possibility that birth control pills will alleviate some of the acne problems due to the amount of hormones that keeps the body in hormonal balance. Birth control pills may also regulate periods and prevent pregnancy. They might also help in relieving PMS and cramps. The disadvantages are also some thing which needs to be taken into consideration. Smokers have more chance of getting cancer if they take birth control pills. The Pill doesn't prevent sexually transmitted disease. The Pill doesn't always prevent pregnancy. If one is too young then he or she may be setting him or her self up for acne yeast infections, which are difficult to completely cure. One may gain weight to nearly about 12 pounds. It may also cause cysts in the breasts and they may become tender and painful. Blood clots are a major possibility. Other side effects include headache, irregular periods, fatigue and abdominal pain.

Summary:

In more than 80 percent of the case studies where patients used Ortho-tri-cyclen, there was marked improvement in the reduction of acne. There are many issues altogether which needs to be taken under consideration before using birth control pills as an acne reducing treatment. The Most important aspect is whether the person has used any other treatment before resorting to birth control pills. There are many pros and cons about taking birth control pills without considering one should not take them for acne.
